I've been using google groups for a few years now to organize friends. It works pretty well, but I really like the idea of GroupMe because some people respond to texts better (and faster) than to emails and vice versa. But other people have very limited texting plans. I'd be nice to allow them to choose how they'd like to receive messages.
Basically it would be sweet to merge these two methods of group communication.
Thanks!

This would be so helpful. It would also be handy for times when your phone is dead or you are in a area like school where service is unavailable. I also think this would be extremely handy in continuing where Google Wave failed. And GroupMe is awesome.
Email Option would allow the user more control of how they choose to communicate...I've been texting phones via email for quite some time now...How can I text the groupme groups via email??? ie verizon "Phone Number" @vtext.com Thank You!
Have a few people that would love to be updated but don't have a texting plan. They use email for everything so this would be helpful.
Hummm, I just starting testing this - I thought email was an option. Seem the initial web page asked for phone # or email...I thought, because how you would receive the message was optional...kind of disappointed that is not the case :-( :-(
this was be incredibly helpful!!!!
i mean this would be incredibly helpful .... i know ppl who have limited texting as well and use email or im for communication
this would also be handy to have to have applications on a server somewhere be able to notify a group easily about issues
be it from server just died alerts to earthquake alerts in certain areas
Hey there,
We just made some updates and users can now chat from http://GroupMe.com.
While it's not email, we think it'll make up for it.

it doesn't
Agree with Bret Towe. Under the new update email only users get no notification that there was a message sent to the group. Need to have an email notification for those people who do not text. T
you guys are doing a great job and they are a lot of request but i think that being able to use it thru email really opens a new door for people to use your platforms in new ways. also a media library for the groups is a must.
I agree that email is an important interface for some use cases that span generations. :)
One solution would be to use Twilio. You could add a Twilio number to a group and connect that number to a service that sent out the notifications via email.
I would like to use this, but many of my group members do not have text plans. So....we can't use it unless the group had an email capability. :(
It would definately be great to be able to send an sms text to a group and configure some users to receive it via email, text, or both. Please work on this to take this great service to the next level.
Email participation will allow people to participate who wouldn't otherwise be able to. For instance, it would be great to use the Blackberry accounts at the bank I am working at. SMS is banned for corporate phones, but email is allowed. The app is great (per the msg above), but it's not a substitute for those who cannot install the app and/or use SMS.
Agree with EVERYTHING said above, participation via email as well would be very nice. I would like to use this service as a neighborhood watch messaging service. So if someone wants to report something suspicious, they text/email/use the app to alert the necessary people who would then be notified by text/app/email at the same time. This would not only ensure proper delivery but would create a written record of the report. It couldn't be that hard to add this feature, could it?
we use groupme to dispatch people to volunteer calls. in order to track stats, ive setup a google docs spreadsheet with email notifications (used a script so email contents will be sent). it would be great if the email can directly be sent to the groupme group.
why not the group#@groupme.com ?
thanks!!!
This would be extremely helpful.
Regarding the Twilio suggestion:
I looked at Twilio, but it is way over my head. It appears to be a service that requires some web development knowledge. If you can elaborate, it would be very helpful.
Jim
I really like Chaverim's group#@groupme.com idea, or something similar.
As for Twilio, is there an app already created that allows me to buy a phone number and easily link it to my email address, or would I need to write this myself? At 1 cent per message, and $1 per month for the number, the cost would be negligible for the convenience.
wait.... all you have to do is get a free google voice account... and it will forward all texts to an email... and you can reply from there
yep... works for me also. not sure why you would say it doesn't.
help me for a moment, just to think this out :)
The original question was a question was if users can receive groupme messages via email. The GV option should work. I think my issue is the opposite, and perhaps a different goal than the OP.
We need to be able to send from an email account (specifically, a google doc form-->email) to groupme.
The GV setup is mainly to receive groupme sms's to an email, but not vice versa.
In the past, after much google searching, and testing of my own, I did try the GV method in order to save the long "from" address, and send messages directly to that long GV email, but I get message failures, it will not let me reverse it...
Thanks
I wish this was possible. We use Groupme for inter-store communications and would love to be able to have our nightly checkout emails show up in the group so that all sales reps can get the number on groupme automatically.
Please, Please, Please add this feature ASAP
I have unlimited text, however, some of my crew don't... I really feel this would be a huge plus++++++
Yeah, I'd pay for the ability of sending an email to my groupme number to send out the text. Seriously.
I found this service if you are looking for group email http://www.emaildodo.com/
emaildodo
I could really use this function. I currently communicate with a group via email and a few of the guys are resistant to change. Being able to get to a few via email will allow me to migrate the majority over to groupme
