What is a Direct Message?

A Direct Message (DM) is a private message that you send to another person on GroupMe.

DMs are sent over your data connection and will never use SMS.

This is useful if:

  • you're in a group with someone whose number you don't have.
  • you want to whisper something in private about an ongoing group conversation.
  • you (or the receiver) have a limited text message plan.
  • you (or the receiver) are in a poor cellular service area.

Note: If you send a DM to a user without the app installed, they'll be notified by SMS that they have a message waiting. They can view it by installing the latest version of our iPhone, Android, or BlackBerry client, or by signing on to the website at http://GroupMe.com.
