After a member of your group leaves the group, you cannot add them again. That's a protection against spamming users who don't want to be in the group. If the app tells you that adding a member is "not allowed", it's because they were once a member of your group but aren't anymore.
To get back in, have them log on to groupme.com, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Show former groups". Then click rejoin.
From there, they'll be added back in and start receiving messages over SMS or in the app (whatever their preference is).
Let me know if you have any other questions or run in to trouble. Happy to help further. #)

The person that I am trying to have rejoin my group never had the app until now (After he disbanned) and he is trying to get in again. He deleted the text thread of the groupme group. Can anyone give me the format that he can use to try and rejoin my group either through the app or SMS? Thanks! :)
Tried to add friend this is what I get "Clites Justin has not responded yet, so you can't re-add them. They can rejoin permanently by sending any message to the group." .....When he tries to send message to rejoin this is what he gets. ...."7548885452 his a ladling#. Reply Y to send all TXT to this # as voice messages for $0.25/msg. + std msg fee. Details @ text.com, textttolandline"
I'm having the same issue as Calvin Smith.... what should my friends do in order to join the group???????
Hi there,
I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience. This is a known error affecting a small number of groups created in the last week (November 7-November 11, 2011). Unfortunately, we cannot fix the issue for Verizon subscribers. Your best bet is to start a new group—everything should work fine.
Again, I am sorry for the trouble. Thanks for using GroupMe! #)
I am having a similar issue as Calvin Smith and Sarrahsomeone above.... one member of my group is able to reply however the other 4 members (Verizon users) are not able to reply. I am a Verizon user but seem to be able to use the group text just fine. I am a part of three groups and only one of them seems to be having this issue. I have deleted and started a new group as suggested and that doesn't seem to fix our issue, unfortunately. Are there any other suggestions?
Hey psalamin,
That's no good! Can you email me at support@groupme.com so I can take a look at your account and see if I can figure out the problem? Thanks! #)
I am having same issue as Calvin Smith and psalamin above. Sending email to support@groupme.com
. Also I am using a a windows phone client. Please update it to real version soooooon! I love GroupMe service.
my text messages were not workin when my business partner sent the first request now i cant join the group until the i respond to first request that i never recieved
We started a group so our church worship team could communicate more effectively. One member did not have a smart phone at the time and opted out because the texts were overwhelming. Well, she got her smart phone this week, added the GroupMe app, and wants to join the group. She can message with me using GroupMe, but she can't find our group and initially, it couldn't find her. We tried to re-add her using her cell number and it said she couldn't be added. We tried adding her using her email and it invited her, but when she tries to get in with the email, it won't let her. She logs in via Facebook, so I suggested she try logging in using her email account and see what happens. Still didn't work. I suggested she try to log in via the email on her computer and see if it would at least make the connection there. Am still waiting to see if she had any luck. Do you have any suggestions?
I've been having the same issue. We created a family group. One of my sisters' names is on the member list but she cannot see any messages from the group. I tried to remove her and readd her but it won't let me.....Can you tell me why she cannot see that she is part of the group? She's using sms.
Thank You!
I have the problem of adding a former member of the group again. The new version of the app has no group number, so i would like to now how can I reinstall a person as a member of my group.
In the post you wrote: ".... If they want to re-join without sending a message, they can send #rejoin....", but you didn't say where they need to send the #rejoin command.
Thank You!
Same problem as Jesus, a friend accidentally quit, but we don't have a group number to text "#rejoin" to. Where are they supposed to send the text? Otherwise, having a great time.
Same problem here. How do I find out what my group number is?
Yes, I have the same problem. My cousin started a group, and invited me in. I was fine until I accidently deleted myself from his group instead of putting it on sleep. I don't know how to add myself back into his group? How can I resolve this please? He's been trying on his end also.
Here is the response I got to my trouble ticket. Honestly, if she didn't also provide my group number, I still couldn't find it, so I've asked that they update the FAQ with a detailed explaination of how to find your group number. As for me - we just killed off the group and quickly created a new group to resolve the problem. The advantages of a small group.
Hi Wendy,
Sorry for the trouble. You can find the group's phone number if you sync the groups with your phone's contacts or if you log on to the website.
Hi everyone, I'm sorry for the trouble. You can find your group number by logging onto the website and clicking on the group. The number will be underneath the name. Another option is if you have synced your groups with your address book then the number should appear in your address book. We will be adding it back to the app soon--stay tuned for updates! And as always, please do not hesitate to email support@groupme.com with any questions! #)
I'm having the same problem I send the #rejoin to the group number but it keeps telling me "Sorry, but you are not a member of this group. Text #new to start a new one." What can I do?
Same problem. I two people who have timed out of the group want to be included. They text the number with anything and it tells them "sorry." I try to add them again via the app and it says "sorry." They text #rejoin to the number and it tells them "sorry." They can only create a new group. Why can't they rejoin ours?
Same problem here....some frustrated parents on my soccer team...if this one bug was fixed...it would be a perfect application. This app saved us at a soccer tournament when game times kept changing due to scattered thunderstorms.
Hi guys, I'm sorry for the trouble. We are working on some different ways to rejoin groups, but right now the best way is through the web.
To get back in, have them log on to groupme.com, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Show former groups". Then click rejoin.
From there, they'll be added back in and start receiving messages over SMS or in the app (whatever their preference is).
Let me know if you have any other questions or run in to trouble, just shoot an email to support@groupme.com. Happy to help further. #)
