What is a Direct Message in GroupMe?

A Direct Message (DM) is a private message to another person on GroupMe.

Sending a DM

There are several ways to send a DM on GroupMe.

Note: You cannot send DMs from SMS.

From your chats list

  1. From your chats, select New chat  New chat button, then DM Message.

  2. Type the name, phone number, or email address of the person you want to message, or select that person from the list.

  3. Type the message and send.

From a group

  1. Select the group's avatar (profile picture).

  2. Select Members  GroupMe Members.

  3. Select the person's avatar (profile picture) that you want to DM, then select direct message. You'll be redirected to a private chat with them.

From a group member's avatar

You can also select the person’s profile directly from the group chat.

  1. Tap on the person’s avatar in the chat.

  2. The person’s profile will pop up, allowing you to send them a DM directly.

Receiving a DM

You will receive a message request on GroupMe whenever a member sends you a DM for the first time. There are multiple ways to respond to a message request.

  • Accept the message to send and receive DMs with them.

  • Delete the message to remove it from your chats. The sender will still be able to message you again in the future.

  • Block the message and the sender to prevent them from sending you DMs or adding you to groups.

  • Report the message when you are concerned the sender has violated GroupMe's code of conduct.

On iOS, these actions can also be taken by swiping left on any chat. On Android, long press to bring up the quick action buttons. 

Note: Media sent by contacts whose messages you have not yet accepted will be blurred. To view it, either accept the message or tap on the media.
